Choosing to make the most of the tall ceilings in their home, these clients decided to include floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in their recent kitchen renovation. The obvious benefit of extending the kitchen cabinets to the ceiling, is increased cupboard space. Extra cupboards ultimately mean extra storage, however, access to the higher cupboards can then become a problem. This is where Access Ladders Qld were contacted to assist with a kitchen library ladder at Ashgrove, Brisbane.
Did you know?
- Library ladders are not just for libraries! Whilst they add functionality to any library or bookshelf, library ladders are also perfect for areas such as the kitchen, closet, wine cellar, pantry and loft.
- Library ladders can be made from pine or decorative timber species. Eg. Tasmanian Oak, Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, White American Oak, New Guinea Rosewood, or any other locally sourced timber species.
- Finishes such as 2-pack paint, clear coat and staining are options.
- You can choose a rolling or non-rolling library ladder, with the option to hook the library ladder on and off the rail.
- A number of hardware options and colours are available to further customise your library ladder system.
About this kitchen library ladder solution:
When considering the addition of a ladder within a kitchen or other living area, it can be difficult to imagine how the two will work together. This is because ladders are not generally thought of as attractive, let alone a piece of furniture. Most people store a step ladder in the garage or shed. They then bring it into the home to access what is needed, before taking it back to the shed or garage to be stored until next time.
These clients however, wanted a permanent in-house furniture grade ladder system, in their kitchen! Thankfully, we had just the solution. Our library ladder systems are customisable, furniture grade products, that actually compliment living areas.
The recently renovated kitchen consisted of black marble bench tops, cabinetry finished in Taubman’s Cotton Ball and brass fixtures. The existing polished timber flooring remained. During the initial consultation, we measured for rail height and positioning. We discussed the possible finishes, as well as the hardware options. Below are the options chosen and why:
- The ladder was to be made of Hoop Pine and finished with a 2-pack coating in Taubmans Cotton Ball. Taubmans Cotton Ball was the colour used to finish the cabinetry. Therefore, it made sense to match the ladder with the cabinetry. Hoop Pine is an affordable option. It is perfect for indoor applications whereby the piece of furniture will be stained or painted to achieve a desired aesthetic.
- Black was chosen for the hardware colour. The hardware includes the rails, brackets, hooks, feet, step supports and associated fixings. Satin Brass was considered, as the kitchen fixtures were brass. However, it was decided that black was the safer option, would match with the black counter tops, and is the more affordable option in comparison to Satin Brass.
- The ladder was paired with non-rolling hardware. Non-rolling hardware is often popular when multiple shorter sections of rail are to be used, like within this kitchen. As the ladder will require transferring between various rail sections, it negates the requirement for the rolling function. Further, non-rolling hardware is the more affordable option.
